I Developed My Art Making Skills
Did you learn new techniques or processes as a part of the work for this project?
I learned many new techniques and processes during the clay tile project. This was not the first time I worked with clay, but this was the first time Ilearned how to score and slip, how to model objects in the round, and how to use different materials and tools to add texture to my tile. I had never had to score and slip any pieces of clay together before this project. In my tile, I had to score each tree trunk and each branch, along with the clouds. I cut the piece I was adding and the part of the clay tile where I was adding that piece, then added water as slip, the. Attached the piece of clay. I learned how to form objects in the round, meaning you can see the object from all angles. Although I did not have any objests fully in the round one tile, we made a fish before hand to practice detailing all parts of the clay. Also, I learned new techniques for adding texture. For example for the tree trunks, I pressed a piece of bark from a real tree against the clay, and it formed the texture of a tree.
I Take Risks
Did you pick a material or technique that was new or different over something that was familiar?
Yes I did pick a technique that was risky during the clay tile project. I used a different technique for making the trees that was riskier than my original idea for making the trees. For the tree branches, I rolled out thin pieces of clay to look like tree branches. I then scored and slipped them and arranged the pieces to look like a pine tree. This was riskier and a different than just using an X - Acto knife or another clay tool to just carve out the basic shape of a tree. This was risky because it is very difficult to get the perfect size and shape of a tree branch, and it is hard to place each individual piece to look exactly like a pine tree would. Although the trees did not turn out exactly how I imagined, I was glad I took the risk and I did like the way they looked.
We Collaborate
Did you ask another student for feedback during your work process?
I asked people at my table and people at other tables for advice and feedback when working on the clay tile. Ace helped a lot in adding texture to the mountains in the back ground and making the trees look more realistic. At first, I just had pieces of clay laying all over the tile in the shape of a triangle and said it was a tree. He showed me how to better arrange each piece and shape the clay so it looked like a real tree. Also, Owen gave me advice withy he tree trunks and adding texture to them using the piece of bark from a real tree. Both of my classmates helped to improve my tile and make the project more successful than it would have been.
